KABULI KID, by Barmak Akram, FOR HAMID AND FERSHTE NAJAFI

Athens April 12th 2010

KABULI KID, by Barmak Akram, FOR HAMID AND FERSHTE NAJAFI

It was Sunday evening, in Athens, on March 28th 2010, when a bomb, hidden in an executive case, next to garbage bin, exploded. 15 years old Hamidoulah Najafi, was passing by with his mother and his 11 years old sister Fershte. Hamid died on the spot. His body was scattered in pieces, in front of his mother’s eyes. His sister never saw this. She lost her vision from the bomb particles that got stuck in her innocent eyes. The sight of her one eye is lost permanently. As for her other eye, she has had three operations to date and is going to go through more, with the hope that she can see again. Mrs. Najafi almost lost a finger. Nobody discusses this loss. This mother has lost everything…

We believe that each one of us is responsible for the society in which we live. Taking responsibility, as honest citizens and real people, we decided to offer our apologies along with our love and compassion to the Najafi family. They are Afgan refugees, who left their country, trying to settle in our city, in order that their children do not live under the fear of bombs…. Many people supported us and our friends in this initiative. Almost all the Hellenic Media: printed, television, radio, internet, supported this sincere heartfelt cause. The good news is that Technology can be a great tool when used with honesty and brains. This idea, sprung up spontaneously during an exchange of comments between friends in facebook and we materialized it, almost on the spot.

We thought that KABULI KID, by Barmak Akram, would serve our purpose of awakening our co-citizens. We offered the film and organized three shows in the FILIP theatre of Athens, kindly offered by Dimitris Spirou for this cause, on Friday April 9th 2010. The entrance was free and the audience was invited to offer whatever sum they could afford. The theatre was packed with concerned citizens of Athens, from 6:00pm to a few hours after midnight last Friday the 9th 0f April. This is the proof we have, that you do not need to belong in an Organization, or a Political Party, or any “big” establishment in order to do what your heart leads you to do. All you need is to feel and express love, with a great deal of help from the friends…

We collected € 9,115.00.

On Saturday morning, April 10th, we visited the family at the hospital. We offered them the €9,115.00, as a first gesture. We are going to do more for them. They expressed their gratitude and their love to us and to all the Greek people that have embraced them, in the most gentle way. The parents never said a word against the murderers of their kid. Not one negative word! What they want to do is to establish an Institution for Children that are Victims of Violence, so that to smooth in others the pain that they feel. Mr. and Mrs. Najafi, should be called Mr. and Mrs. Forgiveness.

As for cute little Ferste, whose name means “Angel” in Farsi, we all pray that she will see again. We promise to do all we can for this young girl.

We promise to do all we can to bring beauty back to our everyday life, with small and effective steps like this one.

We cannot express in writing the feelings we shared with so many people, during all these days, while organizing and then seeing this materializing. All we can say, is that we all sensed the same vibration of solidarity and compassion in the eyes of all the people who were there and who collaborated in making it happen. Above all, the most valuable treasure was the lesson of forgiveness and universal love that the kind Mr. and Mrs. Forgiveness taught us.

We wish to thank everyone, with special, heartfelt thanks to Barmak Akram and his team for making this inspiring film and to our friends at Wild Bunch who made this film travel so beautifully.

With our love,

Peggy Carajopoulou-Vavali on behalf the P.C.V. team
